Central Scottish Amateur League, Premier Division
Gartcosh United 0 Fallin 3 (att 80)
My occasional dips into Scottish amateur football are likely to become more regular as I get ever closer to completing the leagues that make up the country's football pyramid.
This game showed there's plenty of good quality football to be found among the amateur ranks. There may have been little at stake but there was plenty to admire in what was a very competitive 90 minutes.
The Central Scottish Amateur League is probably Scotland's top amateur league, and these are two of the better teams. Fallin are nearing the end of a fixture backlog, their cup commitments having included reaching the Scottish Amateur Cup Final at Hampden Park.
Gartcosh United's ground is more typical of the venues they play on, but the surface was excellent and allowed both sides to play well.
Fallin's sharper finishing was the biggest difference. Their two first half goals in particular wouldn't have been out of place at Hampden, and they wrapped up a win by seizing on defensive uncertainty after the break. Gartcosh pushed right to the end for a consolation but their efforts were in vain.
Gartcosh is a village between Glasgow and Cumbernauld. The football ground is basic, and players have to walk across a road to reach it from the changing rooms. There's a steep grass bank on one side, which provides a good view, and on a warm and sunny afternoon it was a pleasant place to watch a game.
