Bentley Village v Askern Miners reserves

7pm 31 May 2022

Doncaster Saturday League, Division One
Bentley Village 1 Askern Miners reserves 1 (att 155)

It's been a long season for the Doncaster League but it finally reached a conclusion with a game that settled the division one title.

Bentley Village needed a point to overtake local rivals Adwick Park Foresters, but it was no forgone conclusion against third place Askern Miners.

Adwick players were among the larger than usual crowd at the Queen's Drive ground, which was also boosted by groundhoppers who'd travelled from far and wide.

Askern may have had nothing to play for but they began in a determined mood, dominating the opening exchanges. They took a deserved early lead and it was clear Bentley weren't going to have an easy evening.

It was deep into the second half before Bentley finally got the equaliser. Pressure had been growing ahead of their 83rd minute goal, but they had created few clear chances. It was an unfortunate goalkeeping error that tipped the game, and the league, in their favour.

This was Bentley Village's first season in the Doncaster League, so winning the division is some achievement. Their home ground is a pitch in a public park, and for this game one touchline was roped off.
