Scottish Amateur Cup, First Round
St Roch's Amateurs 2 Anniesland 1 (att 35)
I've long been fascinated by the Scottish Amateur Cup. It has a huge number of entries, and its democratic nature means sides from the top leagues go into the first round draw alongside the smallest of minnows.
Until now I'd never seen a game in it, but I put that right with a tie that kicked off early as both teams play in Saturday morning leagues.
St Roch's are a well-established junior club, but this season they also have an amateur side in the Strathclyde Saturday Morning League. The amateurs have their own pitch, the enclosed Glenconner Park, and have made a good start to their domestic campaign.
I expected them to be too strong for Anniesland, who play in the Strathclyde Evangelical Churches League, and they were the better side. But it was a tight game, and it took a late goal to send the home side into round two.
St Roch's scored the only goal of the first half, but Anniesland levelled thanks to a perfectly-struck volley from a corner mid-way through the second half. I was trying to work out if Amateur Cup ties go to extra time time when another well-struck volley gave the home side a stoppage time winner.
Glenconner Park is a ground I missed when it was used by Blochairn Star in the Strathclyde League. It's known colloquially as 'the cage', which is fitting as the narrow pitch it tightly enclosed by a high fence. It's a bit like a 3G set up, but the surface is grass.
