Slaithwaite United v Heywood Irish Centre

6.15pm  3 September 2019

Huddersfield and District League, Division One
Slaithwaite United 0 Heywood Irish Centre 5 (att 14)

I tend to save Huddersfield League games for midweeks at the start and of the season, as most of its grounds are within comfortable range after work even in rush hour. I had the rare luxury of time to visit a chip shop ahead of this game.

The chip shop was in Slaithwaite - or Slawit as it's known locally - while the pitch is a mile away in the neighbouring village of Linthwaite. Players change in Slaithwaite and drive to the ground in their kit.

For the first time visitor, finding the way into the ground can be a challenge. There's no obvious entrance from the main road, but the easiest way is via the car park of the adjacent factory. From there you walk across a cricket ground and into a playing field with two pitches.

The other pitch is home to Linthwaite Athletic, and as each club has a designated pitch I'll need to return at some point to watch them play.

Slaithwaite United may have been on their own pitch but they were no match for Heywood Irish Centre. The visitors dominated from the start and had a 4-0 advantage by half time. The only surprise was that they added just a single goal in the second half.
