North Lancashire and District League, Premier Division
Mayfield United 2 Caton United 1 (att 32)
The North Lancashire League is one of the those leagues that's I always seem close to completing but without ever quite managing it. I think I have three more grounds to go after this, and one of those will be a pitch just yards from Mayfield United.
Mayfield play in Ryelands Park, a pleasant spot not far from the centre of Lancaster. There are three pitches, and Mayfield play on the middle one. In the distance, downhill and closer to the River Lune, Melbourne were playing Bolton-le-Sands.
Having a choice of two games, in case one was off, was a reason for choosing to visit Ryelands Park. The top division fixture was always plan A, and not surprisingly it attracted the majority of the park's local football enthusiasts.
It was a slow burner of a game. After a goalless first half it was Mayfield, last season's champions, who broke the deadlock. They looked the better side, and it was against the run of play when Caton got back on level terms.
Mayfield ended up with all three points though, thanks a cool and composed finish by a player who, when through on goal, neatly rounded the keeper to score the winner.
