Coventry City U18 v Crewe Alexandra U18

11am  18 August 2018

Under 18 Professional Development League
Coventry City U18 2 Crewe Alexandra U18 3 (att 50)

Coventry City's academy has been based at the Alan Higgs Centre for years now, but the pitch I saw their youth team play on in 2006 is now a building site, possibly making way for a new swimming pool.

The pitches they use now are a short stroll away, certainly far enough for me to justify a return visit for a 'new' ground. Coventry and Crewe met at both under 18 and under 16 level, on adjacent immaculate pitches, with a roped off area for spectators in between the two.

I focused on the older age group, and was rewarded with a game that was slow to get going but that came fully to life in the second half.

Coventry went ahead thanks to a first half penalty, and missed chances to add more goals before Crewe got a fortunate equaliser on the stroke of half time. The visitors went ahead early in the second half, but eventually Coventry's pressure was rewarded with an equaliser.

The home side looked favourites to go on and win the game, but a red card cost them a player and in the final minute it was Crewe who scored again to win.
