Colony Park Juniors v Aberdeen East End

2pm  11 August 2018

SJFA North Region, Super League
Colony Park Juniors 1 Aberdeen East End 1 (att 67)

These are changing times for Scottish junior football, but while the East Region has seen an exodus to senior football, and the West may follow suit next summer, the North Region is likely to carry on undisturbed.

Unlike in other parts of Scotland, junior football in the north has long been second best to the senior game. While Colony Park pulled in a relatively decent crowd for this fixture, the bigger attraction in Inverurie on Saturday afternoon was right next door where the local Highland League side were playing.

I've been to Inverurie Loco Works before - twice in fact - but Colony Park had previously eluded me. It was once home to Inverurie Juniors FC, but they folded before I could see a game there, and as recently as February I was thwarted when a Colony Park game was postponed as I headed north.

No such problems in August though, and I was rewarded for the long trek into Aberdeenshire by a decent game between two well-matched sides.

East End had the better of a goalless first half but were guilty of missing chances. They paid for it when an improved Colony Park took a second half lead. The home side had a player red-carded towards then end though, and East End pressure was rewarded by a late penalty which levelled the score.

Most North Region junior grounds are basic and Colony Park is no different. It's a nice place to watch a game though, with a steep grass bank on the near side giving an elevated view of the enclosed pitch. Changing rooms and a tea bar are housed in a small but attractive pavilion, and advertising boards and a PA system give an impression of a well-run club.
