Lancashire Amateur League, Division Three
Bacup United 7 Westhoughton Town 5 (att 10)
A remarkable game at Rawtenstall's Marl Pits Sports Centre. Twelve goals, Westhoughton had two more disallowed, both correctly I thought, and a late red card for the visitors. All that in just 80 minutes, as a late start and a dark evening meant two 40 minute halves.
Westhoughton were twice ahead in the first half, but both times Bacup equalised, before the home side scored twice more for a 4-2 half time lead.
The visitors were level soon into the second half, Bacup then went back in front before Westhoughton levelled again for 5-5 (hope you're keeping up). Two more goals gave the home side the points. Worth pointing out that many of the goals were terrific strikes, and overall the standard of football, if maybe not the defending, was a much higher standard than you'd expect at this level.
My last visit to Marl Pits was to see Rossendale Amateurs on the main pitch, surrounded by a running track. Bacup United play on one of the other pitches, a short uphill walk from the athletics arena. No facilities, but it's enclosed on both sides by trees, and there's good views of the surrounding hills.
