Queens United v Mexborough Athletic

11am 13 August 2023

Montagu Cup, Round of 16
Queens United 7 Mexborough Athletic 0 (att 45)

Having enjoyed my first experience of the Montagu Cup, a fortnight ago at AFP Pewter Pot, I decided to watch one of the four last 16 ties being staged today.

I had a choice of two that were on new grounds, and opted for a clash between sides who both play in the Mexborough and District Sunday League. Assuming no changes since last season, Queens are in the premier division while Mexborough are in division one.

The difference between them showed, although Queens didn't open the scoring until the final kick of the first half. They'd been the better side until then, but there little sign of how one-sided the second half would be.

The home side went 2-0 up 10 minutes after the break, and five minutes later scored a third. That effectively ended the contest, if not the goal scoring. Mexborough were unfortunate not a least net a consolation.

Queens United's home ground, found off Barnsley Road in West Melton, is very good for a Sunday league side. There's a single pitch, grass banking to provide an elevated view, and strategically-placed benches for spectators. The playing surface looked excellent.
