Essex Senior League
Woodford Town 1 Little Oakley 2 (att 242)
Woodford Town are another grassroots club who are working hard to drum up crowds, and are doing do with some success.
Their Twitter feed was asking if the crowd for this match might reach 500. In the end the official figure was slightly less than half that, but it's still good going for a game in the Essex Senior League.
Woodford Town have history, or at least there's a history of a club bearing the name. I saw the original club host neighbours Orient in the FA Cup in 1986, but not long later they entered a downward spiral that became terminal when the lost their old ground.
The new incarnation has a complicated back story. Wikipedia, which isn't always accurate, suggests they were once known as Mauritius Sports (CMB), a club I visited in 2004 when they had a home ground in Tottenham.
Various name and venue changes have followed since, and they now have a name and a ground that ties them to Woodford, where they're developing a creditable fan base.
Ashton Stadium is a decent athletics facility, but not well suited to watching football. The pitch feels distant, beyond a running track, long jump track and a grass surround. It takes an effort to feel engaged with the game.
In the distance I watched as Little Oakley took the points. They scored first but the home side were level by half time. The visitors' winner came midway through the second period.
