Wakefield and District FA, Cyril Craven Challenge Cup, Third Round
Last Orders 1 Stanley United 3 (att 12)
As well as a county-wide FA, West Yorkshire also has district football associations, who each run cup competitions which can throw up interesting ties between teams from different leagues.
It's hard to be sure how many divisions actually separate Wakefield League Premier Division Last Orders from Yorkshire Amateur League Supreme Division Stanley United, but there's no doubt that a home win would have been a major upset.
Not that you'd have thought that during a first half where Last Orders looked much the better team. If statistics for possession, tackles won and attempts on goal had been available at half time they'd all have been in the home side's favour.
Of course the only stats that really matter are goals, and at half time it was one each. Stanley seized on a loose ball in the six yard box to edge in front midway through the half, before Last Orders deservedly leveled barely a minute later.
The 'step seven' side were better after the break, and a penalty for handball gave them a 2-1 lead. It was far from comfortable though, and another home equaliser always looked possible.
Eventually a third goal made the tie safe. Any hopes Last Orders had of a very late comeback disappeared with when they lost two players in the closing minutes, one to a red card and another sin-binned.
As far as I can tell Last Orders was a pub in Featherstone that's now been renamed The Railway. Whether the the football club retains any link to the pub, and whether a similar name change will follow, remains to be seen. They play at Pontefract Barracks, a recreation ground on the road towards Featherstone from Pontefract.
