Wilbraham Club v Kirkham and Wesham Athletic

6.30pm  13 April 2021

Mid Lancashire League, Division Two
Wilbraham Club 1 Kirkham and Wesham Athletic 5 (att 11)

I must have driven past Preston's tree-lined Ribbleton Park dozens of times, and now I've finally seen a football match there.

It's the home ground of Wilbraham Club, who take their name, and presumably their existence, from a social club that's not far from the park. It's a typical park pitch venue, the sort of place where dog walkers become temporary spectators.

The game's decisive moment came in the first half, although we had to wait until after the break for the goals. I didn't see what caused a Wilbraham player to get a straight red card after 25 minutes, but his reaction to being sent off was ugly.

Somehow Wilbraham held out without conceding until half time, but Kirkham and Wesham went ahead just minutes into the second half. Two more goals followed within a minute of each other after around an hour.

The hosts did pull one goal back but conceded twice more. Kirkham and Wesham should have scored more, and could easily have doubled their tally.
