Holme Lacy v Hinton

2.30pm  10 April 2021

Herefordshire County League, Premier Division, Top Section
Holme Lacy 1 Hinton 3 (att 15)

Once I got confirmation at Holme Lacy Playing Field was open to the public I decided it was time to inch a step closer to completing the Herefordshire League's top division. When I lived in nearby Worcester I went to quite a few grounds in the league, but the last of those was more than 25 years ago.

Holme Lacy's football club play in a pitch behind the attractive village hall. There's a single pitch, with a pair of wooden dugouts on the far side and a small pavilion, set back from the pitch with an overhanging roof providing shelter, on the near side.

The shelter was handy on a wet afternoon, but after so many football-free Saturday afternoons I was more than happy to spend 90 minutes or so standing in a field in the rain.

The Herefordshire League Premier Division has been split into two halves for what's left of the season, and this was in the six team top section. Hinton, who like several of the league's clubs have had recent spells in higher leagues, were soon in the driving seat thanks to two goals in the opening 12 minutes.

An excellent third, hit from distance into the top corner of the net, gave them a commanding half-time advantage. Holme Lacy made a game of it in the second half. They pulled one back from a penalty (the spot kick was saved but the rebound converted), but despite looking dangerous they couldn't score a second.
