Savile United v Lower Hopton reserves

6.30pm  7 April 2021

Yorkshire Amateur League, Division Three
Savile United 1 Lower Hopton reserves 1 (att 45)

The FA and the DCMS don't seem to quite agree yet whether spectators are officially allowed to watch grassroots football, and if so at what type of venues, so it was once again a case of finding a public space staging a game.

The Savile Town Playing Field, just south of Dewsbury town centre, is very public. It's surrounded by houses and a factory, and there was a good turnout of locals to watch a side that seems well rooted in its local community.

As expected at this level, the ground itself is nothing more than a pitch, but it's enclosed on three sides by steep grass banking, giving a good elevated view. There's even some benches, allowing people to sit and watch the action.

Cars can park at the top of the bank at one end. Several spectators sat in them, sheltering from a cold evening. They greeted Savile's second half opening goal with a crescendo of car horns, but remained silent when the visitors equalised.

Lower Hopton's leveller was moments after Savile had a player sent off for a second booking, and came from the resulting free kick. Savile might have snatched a winner with the last kick of the game, a shot that was dragged wide when through on goal. A draw was a fair outcome.
