Netherlands, Derde Divisie
Noordwijk 4 DOVO 3 (att 900)
The start of a weekend groundhopping trip to the Netherlands, and the first time I've seen club football in the country. The fourth tier might seem an odd place to begin, but this game meant we could also get to a second match later in the day a short bus ride away.
It was a good fixture to pick though, with Noordwijk top of the league and extending their advantage thanks to defeat for local rivals Quick Boys while they were winning this.
It wasn't easy for Noordwijk though. They started well and took a first half lead, but DOVO levelled and then shocked their hosts by going ahead just before half time. The visitors extended their lead early in the second half, before Noordwijk roused themselves for an exciting comeback.
Noorwiijk is a pleasant seaside town that was an easy bus ride from our Leiden base. Like most lower league Dutch grounds I saw it's a large complex with several pitches as well as the main ground used for first team games.
The pitch in the main arena is artificial, and is dominated by a large seated stand. Inside the stand, on the first floor, is a lively and welcoming clubhouse. The other three sides are open standing, with some shallow terraced steps on the far side.
The large number of advertising boards, especially lining the open side opposite the stand, give the ground a colourful appearance, and suggest that the club's commercial manager should be in the running for the player of the year award.
