Cumberland County League, Premier Division
Cockermouth 1 Wigton Harriers 1 (att 64)
The destination of the Cumberland County League trophy came down to a final fixture showdown between the sides in first and second.
Wigton had a two point advantage as they headed to Cockermouth's Grassmoor ground, so a draw was all they needed to be crowned champions. They got it, but had to come from behind and the outcome was in the balance until the final whistle.
The visitors started on the front foot and it was a little against the run of play when Cockermouth went ahead midway through the first half. The lead didn't last long though, as Wigton equalised with just over 30 minutes played.
There were no more goals but both sides had chances, particularly towards the end as the home side threw everyone forward and were vulnerable on the break. Cockermouth's goalkeeper even joined the attacks in the frantic final moments, but it was to no avail and Wigton got the point they needed.
Rugby union is the main sport at Cockermouth's ground. There's a rugby pitch immediately outside the the clubhouse, with the football pitch beyond. The near side is railed off, but it's a railing that's primary purpose is enclosing the rugby ground. More rugby pitches are beyond, as well as an impressive Cumbrian landscape.
