Sawtry v Stilton United

2pm  31 July 2016

Peterborough and District League, Premier Division
Sawtry 0 Stilton United 2 (att 534)

The "A1 derby" was game seven, out of eight, in this year's Peterborough/United Counties League groundhop, but for me it just the second, and final, game of the weekend.

Sadly it wasn't a thriller, with two late goals giving the visitors a win when a nil nil draw had looked the most likely outcome.

It may not have been great on the field, but Sawtry FC pulled out all the stops off the pitch. Catering for an influx of groundhoppers is one thing, but the club rallied the local community to turn the match into an occasion.

There was a range of stalls, a bouncy castle and face-painting for youngsters, plenty of food and drink, and the club's tea bar had a 1940s theme.

Sawtry were rewarded for their efforts by a bumper crowd, and it was good the see a village club who look to have strong roots in the local community. It was a shame for them that local rivals Stilton, a village just a few miles up the A1, bagged the local bragging rights.
