Yr Wyddgrug v Overton Recreational

1.30pm 10 August 2024

North East Wales League, Championship Division
Yr Wyddgrug 5 Overton Recreational 1 (att 28)

The lower of the two divisions of the North East Wales League is part of the fifth tier of Welsh domestic football. It's also the bottom tier in this part of the country.

As a result, each season sees an influx of new teams, some of whom don't last very long, and existing clubs who suddenly appear at new venues. From a groundhopping perspective, trying to complete the league is like climbing a descending escalator.

Yr Wyddgrug - their name is the Welsh version of the town of Mold - were in the league last season, but they have a new home ground. Their base now is at Gwernymynydd, just outside Mold.

It's just a pitch, next to the village hall which provides changing rooms. The near side is roped off in such a way that makes it effectively a one-sided venue for spectators.

The standard of football at this level can be variable, but this was a decent game between two good sides. Overton started well and their early lead, thanks to a well-taken goal, was no surprise.

The home side responded well. They soon levelled, and were ahead midway through the opening half. They extended their advantage to 3-1 before half time, and added two more after the break.

The scale of the defeat was harsh on Overton, although they were very much second best.
