Prees United v AFC Weston Rhyn

8pm 2 August 2024

Shropshire County League, Division One
Prees United 3 AFC Weston Rhyn 1 (att 70)

It's a long time since I last watched a game in Shropshire's county league, but an 8pm kick off on a Friday evening was the ideal way, for me at least, to begin a weekend.

Prees United have returned to the league this season, have dropped out previously, and got their season off to a winning start against Weston Rhyn.

They had to come from behind to earn the three points, although the visitors' first half opener was against the run of play.

Two goals in three minutes, one a penalty, put Prees in front after about half-an-hour. The second half was dominated by the home side, although it took another penalty, with around 10 minutes left, to extend their lead.

The Weston Rhyn goalkeeper had a busy evening, pulling off some good saves to keep his team in the game.

I wasn't aware that Prees United had a floodlit ground until I spotted this fixture. There are permanent lights on the far side of the pitch, which is railed off and has dugouts, behind which is a hexagonal structure that provides shelter for spectators.

The opposite side borders a cricket pitch and was roped off. Portable floodlights had been wheeled into position on this side, allowing the late evening kick off. The lights weren't the best, but were perfectly adequate.

The ground's focal point is a two-story clubhouse in the corner. The upstairs balcony was packed with people enjoying a drink, with a least some of them also keeping an eye on the action from their elevated vantage point.
