Stannington Village v AFP Pewter Pot

11am 11 August 2024

Montagu Cup, Round of 16
Stannington Village 2 AFP Pewter Pot 3 (att 70)

Last Sunday the opening half of the Montagu Cup's 'round of 16' fixtures failed to yield a new ground to visit, but I had two options to choose from today's four ties.

I picked Stannington Village as it was a slightly shorter drive, and it proved a good choice as they and visitors AFP Pewter Pot provided high quality football, and excellent entertainment, on a warm and sunny morning.

Both teams are from Sunday football. The home side are in the Sheffield-based Blades Super Draw League, while AFP compete in the Rotherham and District League.

The visitors came out on top, but there was little between the sides. Stannington opened the scoring after about 30 minutes, but AFP equalised not long before half time, and at that stage were well on top.

The break helped Stannington, and they began the second period on the front foot. But with an hour or so gone AFP scored against the run of play. Soon afterwards they netted again, leaving the home side with a huge task.

Stannington pulled one goal back, to set up an exciting finale, but AFP kept them at bay to move into next weekend's quarter-finals.

The venue was a pitch on Myers Grove Lane. Looking at Google Maps before travelling I'd expected it to be one of the pitches at the far end of the road, but in fact it's on the right before you get to those. The entrance would be easy to miss.

It's an enclosed and tree-lined pitch, with a small wooden building in the corner. Early arrivals are able to park pitchside.
