Northowram v Shelf

6.15pm  6 September 2019

Halifax and District League, Premier Division
Northowram 1 Shelf 4 (att 40)

The Halifax League season always gets underway with Friday evening games, which gave me and a couple of other groundhoppers an early opportunity to see Northowram at their new home.

Five years ago I saw them lose a 12-goal thriller at Northowram Recreation Ground, and while this game at Old Brodleians Rugby Club wasn't as good as that game it was still a very competitive and entertaining evening.

Locals rivals Shelf provided a tough test for newly-promoted Northowram. They dominated the first half, scoring three times and having a penalty saved. The second half was a more even battle, and the home side deserved their late goal back, even if they'd let in a fourth by the time it came.

Northowram's new ground is outside the village, but not far away on the outskirts of neighbouring Hipperholme. Old Brodleians RUFC have a decent set up, with the main rugby pitch having a seated stand, but footballers have a long walk from changing rooms to a distant pitch.
