5pm 2 August 2014
Peterborough & District League, Premier Division
Netherton United 2 Thorney 1 (att 281)
This was a return visit to The Grange to see Netherton United, but counted as a new ground by my rules as it was played on the enclosed and floodlit 3G pitch, rather than the grass pitch next door they used last time.
I assume all first team games are now played on the all-weather surface, and with a small stand in place it seems this the ground Netherton hopes will earn them a place in the United Counties League, if they can earn promotion.
Although an enclosed pitch, with floodlights and a stand, is an improvement, I wasn't particularly keen on this as a ground. Spectators can only access one side and one end, and in places the fencing is high, obscuring the view. I guess it's not normally a problem, with a crowd of 281 packed inside it wasn't ideal.
It was a frustrating game to watch; some neat football but neither goalkeeper was kept particularly busy. Netherton did enough to make a good start to their promotion challenge, against a Thorney side who won promotion to this level last season.
