Rothwell Town v Kellingley Welfare

6.30pm  1 May 2013

West Yorkshire League, Division Two
Rothwell Town 1 Kellingley Welfare 1 (att 5)

An enjoyable 90 minutes that finished with a surprise result that will be a setback for Kellingley's bid for promotion. They can still overtake the teams above them, but can't afford to drop many more points in their remaining games.

They should have got all three points at Rothwell. Although they fell behind midway through the first half they drew level with a well-worked goal just before half time.

The second half was mostly one-way traffic, yet despite all their pressure Kellingley couldn't get a second goal. In fact, despite defending for most of the half, Rothwell came closest in the second period, twice hitting the crossbar.

Rothwell Town's ground was more pleasant than I'd expected. Essentially it's a railed off pitch on the edge of a housing estate, but it feels enclosed with houses on both sides and a community building, which houses the changing rooms, behind one goal and a social club in the corner. There's even a gateway onto the pitch bearing the club's name on the top. A second fully railed pitch runs lengthways on the far side of the changing rooms.
