Hoole United v Preston Wanderers

7pm  7 May 2013

Mid Lancashire League, Premier Division
Hoole United 0 Preston Wanderers 5 (att 30)

The night the Mid Lancashire League title was decided. Wanderers went into this game second in the table, a point behind leaders Green Town but with a superior goal difference, so they had to better Green Town's result tonight to overtake them.

They had no problems accounting for a lacklustre Hoole United. The visitors scored early, were 3-0 up by half time, and should have finished with more than the five goals they managed.

Too often they were over elaborate in front of goal, although a hard and bumpy pitch didn't help, and it's unfair to criticise a team's finishing when they've scored 110 goals in just 22 league games.

For their part Hoole United, still with another game remaining but with nothing to play for, rarely threatened at all.

The ground, Hoole Recreation Ground in Much Hoole, just outside Preston, is as basic as it sounds. The pitch was roped off along both touchlines, and as usual in the top division of this league we had official referee's assistants rather than club linesmen, which reinforced my overall good impression of the Mid Lancashire League.

As for the league title ... that went to Green Town, as while Preston Wanderers were winning this game they were thrashing Southport and Ainsdale Amateurs 6-0.
