Leixlip United v Peamount Moyle Park

7.45pm  10 May 2013

Leinster Senior League, Senior Division One
Leixlip United 3 Peamount Moyle Park 3 (att 70)

The plan when I booked a flight to Dublin was to recomplete the League of Ireland at Limerick's new ground. However, as is all too often the way in Ireland, the fixture was subsequently moved, allowing opponents Drogheda to compete in this weekend's Setanta Cup Final.

I decided to travel anyway, with a choice of Leinster Senior League games, and was rewarded by one of the most entertaining games I've seen all season.

Leixlip went into the game top of the table, and needing just a point to confirm the title, to go along with promotion to the league's top flight. Not that a defeat would have been fatal to their hopes, with more games to come.

Both sides made lively starts on the 3G surface at the Leixlip Amenities Centre, and it was Peamount who went ahead, thanks to terrific lob over the keeper after 15 minutes.

The home side had plenty of pressure, and missed several good chances, before deservedly equalising moments before half time.

I expected Leixlip to push on and dominate the second half, but Peamount, with nothing play for, matched them, and eventually went 2-1 ahead thanks to an own goal.

Leixlip appeared to determined to get the necessary point, and put Peamount under immense pressure, which eventually paid off with a well-placed direct free kick after 85 minutes. But their celebrations didn't last long, just a minute later an equally well-placed free kick made it 3-2 to Peamount.

Leixlip's efforts to score again became increasingly more frantic, and Peamount's defending ever more desperate, until the home side's all important third goal came deep into stoppage time to the delight, and relief, of the players and their supporters.

A great game, and a great night for Leixlip United, although they'll have to play better than this to flourish in the top division.

Like a lot of Irish clubs, Leixlip have impressive facilities. The Leixlip Amenities Centre is effectively a sports centre, and United's first team use an enclosed and floodlit 3G pitch, with standing rooms for spectators along one side. There's also a full-sized barriered grass pitch, with dugouts, and several junior grass and all-weather pitches.
