Hartpury University v Lydney Town

7.45pm 13 August 2024

Hellenic League, Premier Division
Hartpury University 7 Lydney Town 0 (att 60)

In 2021 I watched Hartpury University win a Herefordshire League home match, and I speculated then that progress on the field might mean to move from their basic football pitch into the campus rugby stadium.

Since then two promotions have propelled them to 'step five', in the premier division of the Hellenic League, and they have indeed moved a few yards to share with Hartpury's rugby union team.

Hartpury play in the second tier of English rugby, and as you'd expect the facilities are very good. A stand runs the length of one side of the pitch, with more than enough seats for those watching football. The rest of the ground is open standing, with some grass banking beyond on the far side.

An unusual feature at this level, and more useful for rugby than football, is an electronic scoreboard. It was well used as Hartpury thrashed visitors Lydney.

The away side started well, forcing a good save from the Hartpury keeper early on. But once the students went ahead, after 15 minutes, they were unstoppable.

It was 4-0 by half time, and a couple more goals wouldn't have flattered the hosts. They cored a firth early in the second period, and added gloss to a comfortable evening with two late goals.
