2pm 17 August 2024
Anglian Combination, Premier Division
Bungay Town 0 Norwich United 3 (att 82)
I was in the south east for the weekend and chose this fixture, even though it was far from the closest, as the 2pm kick off allowed just enough time to make it to a second game later in the afternoon.
Bungay’s ground, Maltings Meadow, is well worth a trip in its own right though. It looks capable of staging football at a higher level that ‘step seven’ in the Anglian Combination’s top division.
The club won promotion to this level last season, whereas visitors Norwich United began last season two tiers higher in the Eastern Counties League, but failed to complete the season.
Apparently United are tipped to win the league this season, and they looked justifiable favourites early on when two goals inside the opening 10 minutes put them in control.
After that start their football never quite flowed as well, and Bungay got themselves back into the game.
The outcome was put beyond doubt about 10 minutes before half time, when an audacious volley from beyond the halfway line dipped just below the crossbar and just out of reach of the Bungay keeper's despairing hand.
The second half was slower, no surprise on a warm afternoon. Bungay occasionally threatened to get a goal back, but the visitors largely kept them at arm's length.
There are some good venues in the Anglian Combination, and Bungay's is among them. There's a seated stand, floodlights and a fine clubhouse. The venue also hosts cricket and tennis.
