Merseyside Christian League
Huyton Eagles 1 Bridge Cathinians 3 (att 9)
Wet weather made it a day for seeking out fixtures on artificial surfaces rather than risking games on grass. I took the opportunity to return to previously visited venues for some pitch ticking.
I was last at the Lord Derby Academy in 2011. Back then it was called the Huyton Arts and Sports College and it was home to Page Celtic, who played in the Liverpool County Premier League on a grass pitch.
That pitch is is still there, and fully railed off, but the main football facility now is a caged 3G that was hosting this game.
It's a typical set up, and one that doesn't have any specific area for spectators to stand inside the high fence. Outside it there is some shelter, provided by a covered area over some picnic tables.
From the league table I expected a comfortable away win. Bridge Cathinians (the league's Full Time website hasn't yet caught up with their name change from Bridge Chapel) left with all three points but had to work hard for them.
Huyton Eagles started well and opened the scoring. A penalty for handball gave Bridge their equaliser. The spot kick was the last action of the first half.
The visitors eventually got the upper hand, and the lead, during the second period. They deserved their win but it took a well taken late third goal to put the outcome beyond any doubt.
