Ballymun United v Swords Celtic

12 noon 3 December 2023

Leinster Senior League, Senior Division One
Ballymun United 3 Swords Celtic 0 (att 50)

With a handful of Sunday options to pick from in the Dublin-centered Leinster Senior League, and the weather again a factor, I opted for this game once Ballymun United's social media confirmed it was on.

It had been listed as an 11 o'clock start on the league website, but the later time was fortunate. When I arrived, and paid my 5eu for admission, I was told the ground had earlier been shrouded in thick fog.

It had cleared by kick off but Swords Celtic will wished the conditions hadn't improved. They were second best from the start, comprehensively beaten, and fortunate the final score was only 3-0.

Two first half goals put Ballymun United in control. Swords were more competitive at the start of the second half, but a third home ended any hopes they had of a comeback. The home side should probably have added more.

Ballymun is a north Dublin suburb. United's home ground is adjacent to an Ikea store and bordered by the M50 motorway. The sound of traffic, and flights taking off and landing at nearby Dublin airport, provide an audible backdrop to the football.

The main pitch, next to a two-storey clubhouse building, is fully railed off, with dugouts and some advertising boards.
