Wheelock Albion v Crewe Town

6.15pm 6 September 2023

Crewe and District League
Wheelock Albion 3 Crewe Town 5 (att 18)

If ever there was a game of two halves it was this. Wheelock looked on their way to a comfortable win with a 3-0 half time lead, but Crewe Town were about to embark on a remarkable comeback.

They pulled their first goal back in the opening minute of the second period, made it 2-3 just a minute or so later, and were level not long after that.

With momentum well and truly in their favour, and Wheelock unable to resist, Crewe Town scored twice more to complete a victory that had seemed impossible at the game's halfway point.

Wheelock is just outside Sandbach. The football club, a new name in senior football this season, play at Forge Fields, a football pitch enclosed by a canal and a river and accessed via a bridge and short path from a housing estate.

There are changing rooms near the entrance, and a steep grass bank on the near side provides a good view of the action. The pitch wasn't the best, with cut grass left on the surface, but it didn't detract from an very entertaining game.
