FCV Grace Dieu v Hucknall Town reserves

7.45pm 13 September 2023

Nottinghamshire Senior League, Division One
FCV Grace Dieu 2 Hucknall Town reserves 2 (att 60)

The game was an unexpected bonus of a new floodlit ground within reach of a post-work rush hour journey.

The FCV International Football Academy has been around for a few years now and this season, for the first time as far as I'm aware, they have a side playing senior men's football.

The academy has moved from Stamford into a base at Grace Dieu Manor, near Thringstone in  Leicestershire. It's far enough north in the county to warrant a place in the second tier of Nottinghamshire's county league.

The impressive set up includes a newly-developed enclosed artificial pitch, which has a spectator area running the length of one side and dugouts opposite. It feels like a work in progress, but with scope for further improvements.

On the pitch FCV Grace Dieu have justified their place in the Nottinghamshire Senior League. This game ended their perfect start of five wins from five games, and they showed enough quality football to suggest promotion is a realistic target.

They started well against Hucknall's second team and took a deserved lead. But two Hucknall goals turned the game around and knocked FCV out of their stride.

The home side levelled with an unstoppable free kick that was the last action of a thoroughly enjoyable first half. Sadly the second period failed to live up to the game's earlier promise. There were half-chances at both ends but little prospect of further goals. A draw was about right.
