North Riding League, Premier Division
Grangetown Boys Club 2 Whitby Fishermen's Society 0 (att 78)
A Friday night under floodlights was a good opportunity to head to Middlesbrough and tick off a ground that's showing signs of being prepared for a higher level of football.
I assume Grangetown Boys Club have sights on the Northern League, as their ground has acquired floodlights and a small seated stand relatively recently. There's also evidence that hard standing is planned at one end and along one side.
It's good to see a club developing its own facilities rather than opting for a groundshare to climb the leagues. Progress off the pitch has to be matched by success on it of course, and Grangetown look a decent side.
They won this thanks to a goal after two minutes and a second after 81 minutes. They should have added more in between, but all too often the final pass or shot went astray.
They played some neat football though, and Whitby Fishermen's Society also did their bit to produce an entertaining game. It's very early days of course, but I'd expect Grangetown to be challenging for the title next spring.
