NFA v Henllan

2.30pm 11 March 2023

North Wales Coast East League, Division One
NFA 3 Henllan 0 (att 40)

I thought I'd be seeking the sanctuary of a 3G surface for an afternoon game, but Rhyl seemed to have escaped the snow that hit other parts of north Wales, and there was no problem with the pitch at Ffordd Derwen.

It's on the outskirts of the town and is home to NFA (North Football Association), who are turning what was an open playing field into a proper venue. The main pitch is railed off and changing rooms are in a building near the entrance.

There's not yet any dugouts or cover for spectators, which made it a challenging game to watch, particularly in a first half played in a mix of rain, sleet and snow.

It can't have been easy to play in either. The opening period's only goal was a controversial one, the referee deciding the ball had crossed the line before it was clutched by the Henllan keeper. The decision surprised me, but the official had a much better view that I did.

NFA's win was sealed thanks to a pair of second half goals, as the weather thankfully eased. Henllan played their part in an enjoyable game, but rarely looked like getting a result once they fell behind.
