Manchester Medics v Urmston Town Vale

10.15am 11 March 2023

Manchester Saturday Morning League, Division Two
Manchester Medics 5 Urmston Town Vale 2 (att 7)

In a competition that has a high turnover of venues, Medics' new home pitch was the one ground I had left to visit in the Manchester Saturday Morning League.

It wasn't my first time at the playing fields of Parrs Wood High School in Didsbury. I saw Parrswood Celtic play here in 2005, but their pitch was on the south side of the River Mersey. Medics play north of the river, closer to the school buildings.

It's just a pitch, which is all you'd expect at this level. The game, also as expected, made up in effort and endeavour what it lacked in skill.

Urmston opened the scoring, and might have gone on to win had ill-discipline not been their downfall. They had a player in the sin bin when the home side equalised just before half time.

Manchester Medics, just one place off the bottom of the league, went in front after the break. Urmston levelled, but their players were increasingly arguing among themselves.

Their problems reached a peak when Medics went back in front. In a first in games I've seen, the referee insisted on a short time out to allow tempers to calm. It worked, but it didn't help the away side who conceded twice more, the final goal deep in stoppage time.
