Cymru Premier
Pontypridd United 0 Connah's Quay Nomads 5 (att 248)
Back in April 1990 I visited a team called Ynysybwl. Not long later they became Pontypridd-Ynysybwl, then Pontypridd Town and, this summer, Pontypridd United.
With a changing identity has come a couple of different home grounds and a climb through the leagues. This is the club's debut season at the pinnacle of Welsh football, the Cymru Premier.
Newly-promoted teams often struggle at this level, and this defeat leaves Pontypridd just one place of the bottom. It was no surprise though, with Connah's Quay second in the league and chasing leaders The New Saints.
The visitors were devastating in the opening half. Any defensive errors by the home team were seized on, and clinical finishing put them 4-0 up by the break.
Pontypridd put in a battling second half performance, limiting Connah's Quay to just one more goal, although of course the contest was already over,
United play on a 4G pitch at the University of South Wales Sport Park. It was my third visit to the complex, having previously seen home games, on different pitches, for Cardiff City's youth team (in 2003) and Bridgend Town (in 2009).
There are three seated stands, two on one side and one behind the goal, and spectators can access all four sides of the pitch.
