Sheffield and District Fair Play League, Division One
Sheffield West End 3 Sheffield Union reserves 1 (att 4)
I had been set on seeing another game in this league and having considered the overnight temperatures I decided it was safest to head to a fixture being played on an artificial pitch.
The 3G surface at Sheffield University's Goodwin Sports Centre was white with frost at kick off, and only turned green slowly as the sun got to it. Had it been grass it would surely have been postponed.
Caged all-weather pitches are often dull venues, but this one is improved by some imposing surrounding buildings. Despite its proximity to Sheffield's city centre, the adjacent Crookes Valley Park lake provides a tranquil balance.
It was a lively and enjoyable game. West End always had the edge, and two first half goals effectively made all three points safe, despite losing their goalkeeper to injury a few minutes before half time.
They scored a third soon after the break, and were untroubled despite Sheffield Union, whose first team play in the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Senior League, pulling a goal back.
