6.15pm 2 May 2018
Altrincham and District Amateur League, Division Two
Urmston Town 4 Salford United 0 (att 35)
This would have been a title decider had Salford United won, but Umston's victory means they leapfrog the visitors and take a one point lead into the clubs' final fixtures at the weekend.
A final score of 4-0 was hard to predict after a tight first half of few chances. Salford United had the better opportunities, and that continued after the break but too often they failed to hit the target, and when they did Urmston's keeper kept them out.
Salford paid the price for being wasteful in front of goal when Urmston took the lead mid way through the second half. A second goal about 10 minutes later gave Urmston a cushion, and as Salford heads dropped near the end two late goals gave the scoreline a harsh look.
Key to Urmston's win was a player who wore their number nine shirt in the second half. I didn't notice him the first half so I assume he came on as sub, but he ran rings around the Salford defence, setting up the first two Urmston goals and scoring the second two.
Urmston Town play at the Lostock Playing Fields, accessed off Audley Avenue in Stretford. It's a basic playing field, next to a school, with three or pitches, and the sound of traffic on the nearby M60 motorway is ever present.
