Westbrook YMCA v Churwell Lions

2.30pm  3 September 2016

West Riding County Amateur League, Division One
Westbrook YMCA 3 Churwell Lions 1 (att 7)

Revisiting venues because teams have shifted from pitch to another is rarely exciting, but as I needed to stay fairly local a return trip to Lawnswood YMCA, in north Leeds, was a good option.

Last time I came the pitch was close to the changing rooms and other YMCA buildings, but since then a sports hall has been erected on part of the site, making that pitch too small for senior football.

Westbrook YMCA now use a pitch that runs parallel to the old one, closer to Otley Road and a 'new ground' by my rules.

At present it's very basic, surprisingly so for the middle division of the West Riding League. The pitch is simply roped off along each touchline, with the ends left open and a lengthy uphill walk, across what's left of the former pitch, to the changing rooms.

To be honest the standard of football was also some way short of what I'd expect to see in this league. To be fair to the players though, rain poured down throughout, making conditions difficult, and there was no shortage of effort and endeavour.

Churwell, without a win from their opening league matches, had the better of the first half, but having taken the lead they surrendered it, and it was 1-1 at half time. Westbrook upped their game early in the second half, scoring two goals that proved decisive.
