Halifax and District League, Division One
Elland Allstars 2 Sowerby Bridge 4 (att 35)
The Halifax League's welcome tradition of getting the season underway with a series of Friday evening fixtures is a bonus for groundhoppers, providing local games on nights when there's little to choose from.
Elland Allstars' Hullen Edge home was the only choice for me as the sole venue hosting a game that I'd not been to before. It's a large public park with a single football pitch, and players change at the next-door cricket club.
Division one is the middle of three division in the league, and a level lower than most games I've watched in the past. Unsurprisingly the standard wasn't as good as the premier, but it was an entertaining and, at times, feisty, encounter.
Sowerby Bridge were the better side, and deserved their win, although it took a second half comeback to get the three points.
Elland had scored first again the run of play, and it was no surprise with Sowerby Bridge equalised, but having drawn level they allowed the hosts to get back in front. The visitors were well on top after break, and once they'd drawn level they always looked likely winners.
