Netherton v Diggle

6.15pm  3 September 2014

Huddersfield and District League, Division One
Netherton 1 Diggle 6 (att 20)

A rare venture into the Huddersfield League for me, but one that produced an enjoyable 90 minutes as well as a new ground.

Not so enjoyable for Netherton though. Visitors Diggle spent the first half kicking down the considerable slope at the Lightenfield Recreation Ground, and had little trouble building up a commanding 4-0 lead by the break.

Netherton responded by scoring early in the second half, but any hopes of an unlikely comeback soon faded as Diggle scored twice more.

Netherton's pitch doesn't just slope, but is also uneven and bumpy, making quality football difficult. It's fairly well enclosed though, bordered by the local Conservative Club behind one goal and by houses and a school around the perimeter. I'm not sure where the changing rooms are, but as I drove towards the ground I passed players in full kit walking down the village high street.
