Lancashire League, West Division
Eccleshill United reserves 1 Witton Albion reserves 2 (att 30)
The only attraction of this fixture, on a very cold Friday night in Leeds, was the venue. Eccleshill's main ground is reserved solely for the first team this season, so reserve and 'A' team games in the Lancashire League are played on the 3G pitch at Leeds Metropolitan University's Beckett Park Campus in Headingley.
It's a typical 3G set up, the fenced in pitch is between an artificial hockey pitch and a grass rugby pitch. Two football pitches are behind the goal, one of them, where I've previously seen Leeds Metropolitan University play, is now railed off.
Eccleshill United have some sort of tie up with the grandly-titled Richmond International Academic and Soccer Academy, which seems to specialise in bringing young soccer players over from the United States. There appeared to be more American accents than Yorkshire ones among the home players and staff.
Witton started the game well, taking the lead in just the second minute. Eccleshill equalised about 20 minutes later, but unfortunately neither side could maintain the evening's bright start, and as the temperature dropped so the quality of the football.
The visitors always looked a bit sharper and stronger, while Eccleshill showed the greater skill, but both sides were let down by too many sloppy passes.
Oddly, Eccleshill chose to substitute their keeper about five minutes from the end, despite no obvious injury. Inevitably the replacement's first job was to pick the ball out of net after Witton immediately scored their late winner.
