Surrey Elite Intermediate League
Bookham 1 Virginia Water 3 (att 8)
I've watched some enjoyable football in the Surrey Elite Intermediate League in the few years since the competition was established, but although this game was entertaining enough it wasn't the greatest in terms of quality.
To be fair to the teams the conditions didn't help. The game began in pouring rain, the pitch was heavy and uneven, and the grass could have done with a cut.
Bookham recently spent a spell at a higher level, groundsharing with nearby Dorking, and their own home is surprisingly spartan. The pitch is taped off on one side only, with a pair of temporary dugouts that were no match for the strong wind.
Some distance away, beyond a cricket square, a two-storey pavilion houses changing rooms and a bar, from where welcome hot drinks were sold at half time.
Bookham played some good football when I saw them at Horsley earlier in the season, but they were very poor in this match. Virginia Water's win was more comfortable than a 3-1 scoreline might suggest, even accounting for a Bookham penalty that was saved. On another day the visitors might easily have doubled their tally.
