Queen of the South U19 v Stranraer U19

1pm  3 March 2013

Scottish League, Under 19 Youth League Cup, West Section
Queen of the South U19 2 Stranraer U19 3 (att 46)

Stranraer came out on top in this south west Scotland derby, but in truth it was a poor game between two disappointing sides, and a long way short of the standard of the previous day's under 18s game I watched at Northampton Town.

The visitors scored the only goal of a scrappy first half, during which both sides struggled to maintain possession and Queen of the South seemed unable to tackle without giving away fouls.

The game, and both teams, improved after the break. The home side scored a well taken equaliser, but Stranraer always looked the better of the two, and scored twice to establish a commanding lead. A late goal back for the home side set up an entertaining end of the match, but they couldn't level the score.

Most Queen of the South youth games are played at local non League venues, but this game was at the David Keswick Athletic Centre in Dumfries. They've played occasional games here before, and the venue often hosts local amateur cup finals, but never having been able make it to a game here before this lunchtime kick off a perfect opportunity to finally "tick it".

The grass pitch is, not surprisingly, surrounded by a running track, so viewing is a bit distant, but there are plenty of uncovered seats, above which is a balcony which gives the best view of the action.
