Clyst Valley v Beer Albion

4 March 2012
East Devon Senior Cup, Third Round
Clyst Valley 4 Beer Albion 0 (att 24)

The East Devon Senior Cup has been a useful source of Sunday games over the years, and a visit to Clyst St Mary, on the edge of Exeter, was a handy stopping point on the way home from the previous day's game in Cornwall.

The match was a curious one. Beer were awful in the first half, especially at the back, allowing Clyst to score twice in the first 12 minutes, and to add two more before half time. Poor though Beer's defending was, Clyst scored some great goals.

The visitors were better after the break, but although they had plenty of possession they rarely looked like scoring once, never mind the four they'd have needed to take the tie into extra time. Clyst tried to hit the visitors on the break, but were unable to add to their first half spree.

I'd driven past Clyst's Winslade Park several times, so I knew roughly what to expect. It's a decent ground for the level the club plays at (Devon and Exeter League, Premier Division). The far side is railed off, with advertising boards and old dugouts that now serve as a tiny stand. There's a grass bank on that side, with plenty of parking space at the top, while the remainder of the pitch is roped off, with a pair of newer wooden dugouts on the opposite side. The changing rooms are in a traditional old pavilion in a corner of the ground, with a overhanging roof providing cover, and there's a separate tea bar.
