Montagu Cup, Quarter-Final

This season's Montagu Cup has reached the quarter-final stage, and I travelled to the Rotherham suburb of Wickersley to see if the holders could continue their quest to regain the trophy.
From a groundhopping perspective it was also a chance to 'tidy up' a previous visit to the Bob Mason Recreation Ground. In 2024 the hosts, then under the name Joker Wickersley, played on an open pitch close to the entrance. Now they've moved to the venue's railed off pitch.
The Montagu Cup tie was one of two games on the ground today, and neither was on the pitch used two years ago.
Although Wickersley and Whiston are local rivals, the teams play in different leagues. Wickersley are in the Sheffield-based Blades Super Draw Sunday Sports League, while Whiston play in Rotherham and District Sunday league.
I thought the home side would be favourites, and they proved me right by winning comfortably if unspectacularly. They took the lead in the opening minute, and created enough early chances to suggest they might score plenty more.
But to their credit Whiston dug in and were soon rewarded with an equaliser. Wickersley were always in control though, and two more goals before half time settled the game.
The closest we got a second half goal was a Wickersley penalty, controversially awarded but then missed. The visitors battled to reduce the arrears, but never really looked like doing so.
