Sheffield and District Fair Play League, Division Three
Zion New Boyz 5 Doncaster Vulcan 3 (att 12)
I visited Maltby Main, or Maltby Miners Welfare as they were then called, way back in 1990. It was a night game so I wouldn't have noticed the playing field adjacent to the ground, but now I've been back and seen a game on it.
There are two parallel pitches, with an end-to-end slope down towards Maltby Main's ground. A youth team game was being played on the other pitch, while I focused my attention on the third, and lowest, tier of Sheffield's Saturday morning league.
Visitors Doncaster Vulcan won the coin toss and elected to play down the slope, and with a strong wind behind them. They started well, forcing some good saves by the Zion keeper and then going ahead through a well-worked goal.
But they failed to make the most of having the conditions in their favour and Zion New Boyz - an 'outreach project' of Zion Evangelical Church who have clocked up more than 20 years as a football club - equalised.
A penalty put Vulcan back in front just before half time, but a 2-1 advantage proved too little for a second half playing uphill and into the wind.
After the break two quick goals put Zion in front, and they extended their lead to 5-2 before the visitors got a late consolation. Considering the level, it was a very enjoyable game for the neutral.
