Wigan and District Amateur League, Division One
Hag Fold 0 Leigh Foundry reserves 1 (att 30)
I had a limited choice of matches tonight, given the need to find something within range after work. In more normal times I might have opted for a night in, but watching football still feels like a novelty at the moment so I headed to Hag Fold in Atherton.
A fixture between the bottom two teams in the Wigan League's second tier might not seem that enticing, but there was a good turnout of locals who lined the Devonshire Road pitch. We had a wait before the action started though, as a late-arriving referee delayed kick off by about 20 minutes.
The game was reduced to 40 minutes halves to ensure it was completed before it got dark, but with a short half-time break there were no problems. A tight and scrappy game, not helped by the pitch and its long grass, was won thanks to a solitary first half goal for the visitors.
Devonshire Road is an open recreation ground in a housing estate. Changing rooms, when they're allowed to open, are in a portable building in a corner of the ground, adorned with a sign bearing the club's name.
