Christ Church Coseley v Dudley Lions

10.30am  10 April 2021

West Midlands Christian League, Division Two
Christ Church Coseley 2 Dudley Lions 4 (att 12)

Officially spectators are now allowed to watch games in public spaces but not on private land. What difference that makes to the spread of covid is anyone's guess, but it's presented an extra challenge to groundhopping.

I've no idea who runs the Churchfields Playing Fields in West Bromwich, and whether they're technically public or private, but the dozen spectators at this Saturday morning league game were able to safely distance while watching the action.

It wasn't my first choice of fixture, but roadworks and accidents delayed my journey south, and I knew this venue was close to the M6. It got off to a lively start, as Dudley Lions went ahead in the opening minutes.

That was the only goal of a scrappy first half. A bumpy pitch didn't help the players, but effort is always likely to be more important than skill in the second tier of the West Midlands Christian League.

The second half was much improved, as Christ Church turned the game around to lead 2-1, only to collapse as Dudley Lions stepped up a gear to score three times, all netted by the same player.

There are three pitches at Churchfields, served by an inadequately-small car park. All three were in use, with youth matches on the other two while this game was played on the pitch furthest from the entrance.
