Midlands AFA v Aberdeenshire AFA

2.15pm  15 December 2019

Inter-Association Trophy/George Stephen Trophy at Craigie Community Sports Arena, Dundee
Midlands AFA 2 Aberdeenshire AFA 0 (att 19)

I had no idea this game was happening until I spotted it among the fixtures in the excellent Press and Journal on Saturday.

The paper didn't give a venue or kick off time though, and the Aberdeenshire AFA website didn't mention the match at all. Luckily the Midlands AFA site was more forthcoming, and so I broke the long journey home from Inverness with a detour to Dundee.

The caged 3G football ground at Craigie may be officially called an 'arena', but that is a bit of a push for what is a basic artificial pitch. There's no designated spectator area, but there was no problem standing pitchside for this game.

The venue wasn't as random as it might appear. The ground is home to Morgan Academy Former Pupils, who play in the premier division of the Midlands Amateur League.

This fixture was the opening game of a triangular tournament that also features the Kingdom of Fife AFA. Midlands and Aberdeenshire also play annually for the George Stephen Trophy, so that was up for grabs.

It was won by the hosts. A well-taken free kick gave them a first half lead, doubled thanks to a penalty early in the second period.

Aberdeenshire missed a chance to get back in the game when their own penalty was saved. That it was saved by a Midlands keeper who should have been sent off, for pulling back a player about to score, must have been doubly frustrating.

The Midlands keeper made more good saves to protect his side's two goal cushion, and Midlands also withstood a late red card after a bad tackle. The visitors deserved at least a goal for their efforts.
