Wythenshawe Amateurs v Old Altrinchamians

6.30pm  11 April 2018

Manchester League, Premier Division
Wythenshawe Amateurs 3 Old Altrinchamians 2 (att 62)

In early July I started my season by watching Wythenshawe Amateurs play a friendly on a borrowed 3G pitch. Back then they were waiting to move into their new home, and as the season approaches its end they've now settled into Hollyhedge Park.

It's a good facility, and as the club is eyeing promotion to step six and the North West Counties League then it's sure to get better. To my untrained eye it just needs some seats in the stand and floodlights for the step up.

Floodlights would have been useful for this match, which after a slightly late start and a full half-time break ended in near darkness.

Wythenshawe found themselves hanging on as the final whistle approached, having had a surprisingly tricky time overcoming Old Alts, who are struggling in the league but performed well.

The visitors scored the first half's only goal, but Amateurs were better in the second half and scored three times, including a penalty, to turn the game around.

A well-taken late goal for Old Alts kept the game in the balance, but as the gloom descended and visibility lessened the home side held on to secure three more important points in their quest for promotion.
